Darwin Hershel Chambers, age 73, passed from this life Tuesday, October 31, 2017. Darwin was born in Florala, Alabama on his mother’s birthday, October 17, 1944.
Darwin graduated from Blountstown High School in 1964 and Tallahassee Barber College in 1965. He was a successful businessman who owned and operated Chambers Barber Shop in both Tallahassee and Blountstown for over fifty years. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge and an auxiliary policeman in Tallahassee, Florida. He was a longtime member of the Blountstown Lions Club where he served as secretary-treasurer. Darwin and his family relocated to the Carr Community in 1960 coming from Laurel Hill. He has been a member of Poplar Head Baptist Church since that time. He served as Brotherhood Director and enjoyed cooking breakfast for the group every month. He loved cooking and cookouts and helped with many fundraisers. He made many visits to homes, nursing homes, and hospitals to give haircuts to those who could not come to the shop. He never accepted any money for this. He was once featured in a television documentary about having the only “true” barbershop in town. He was a proud sponsor of Dixie Youth Softball and enjoyed giving Terry advice on how to coach. He loved sucker fishing and spent many years on Ten Mile Creek with Mr. Cecil Sexton and Mr. Robert Wood providing a place for young people to come and enjoy the sport that he enjoyed so much.
